EMPD busts tavern and shebeen licence scame
Thursday, August 4, 2011
Ekurhuleni Metro Police Kathorus Crime Prevention Unit, acting on a tip-off
from the members of the public, on Saturday 30 July at midday arrested four
male suspects in possession of a computer installed with software capable of
producing liquor permits for taverns as well as certificates with Gauteng
Provincial government letterheads. The four suspects were arrested in
Vosloorus. "The mushrooming of unlicenced taverns and shebeens in our city is a great
concern to law enforcement agencies in Ekurhuleni and has thus, galvanized
the Metro Police into intelligence gathering action in this regard.
Investigations conducted have revealed that the number of legally issued
licences did not tally with the number of operators on the ground. The EMPD
wishes to express gratitude to members of the community for their
information which made it possible for the police to bust this syndicate",
the EMPD Spokesperson, Wilfred Kgasago said. A special unit is currently working ardently to identify all the taverns
responsible for the illegal purchase of such permits. Allegedly, the permits
are sold for between R1,500 and R2500 per permit. More arrests are imminent
in this matter. Charges of fraud and unlawful possession and production of unlawful official
documents have been registered against the four suspects at the Vosloorus
police station. The four will appear in the Vosloorus magistrate's court on
Monday, 01 August 2011.
